6 Things to Do at Dubai Mall…Other Than Shop!

Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping mall is located in Dubai, United Arab Emirates part of the new Downtown Dubai initiative. Home to over 1,200 stores, it covers 5.4 million sq ft spread over 4 floors and carries everything from Forever 21 to Zara to Hermès and even houses a supermarket and five (5!) department stores: Galeries Lafayette, Bloomingdale’s, Debenhams, Marks & Spencer and Paris Gallery. If you’re looking for something, there’s a very good chance you will find it at this mall.

There’s much to do and miles of ground to cover (or in my case, take a wrong turn and get lost!).
But, not everyone comes to the mall to go shopping. You might have come to see the mall in all its splendor, but spending hours window shopping doesn’t tickle your fancy. Fear not! I’ve compiled a list of things you could be doing instead of shopping.

1) The Dubai Fountain

The largest dancing fountain in the world shoots water as high as 500 ft, equivalent to that of a 50-storey building. I recommend coming during the day, when it isn’t as crowded and you can actually enjoy the show. The first afternoon show on a weekday starts at 1:30pm. Evening shows are every 30 minutes beginning at 6:00pm until 11:00pm.
Tip: When the weather is pleasant, I recommend picking a restaurant situated along the waterfront to watch the fountain – satisfy your appetite while getting a great show!

 2) Burj Khalifa Photography

The rather random horse sculpture (on the left) is not to be missed…

The Burj Khalifa ( burj means Tower in Arabic) is the world’s tallest building & is definitely a sight to see & can be a little challenging to photograph. I found the best location to capture the entire building (yes, all 2,722ft) on camera is in front of Fortnum and Mason.
If you’re interested in viewing the interior, and get a view of the city below, you can visit the skydeck, At The Top, Burj Khalifa. For the cost of 125dhs aka $34, you’ll gain access to a view deck on the 124th floor. Head up & soak in the pretty unique architectural structures built in the sand below.

3) Food! Glorious Food!

Being the largest mall in the world obviously means there isn’t a shortage of restaurants and kiosks to grab a bite to eat. What I love is that it’s completely possible to take a world food tour without leaving the confines of the mall!
A few recommendations:

  •  Eataly – the popular Italian food market opened up in Dubai, with its own, permanent Nutella bar!
  • Katsuya by Starck – love the decor, and the food (Japanese) is great, too!
  • Social House – cosmopolitan menu (very indicative of Dubai), but the absolute must try is their Homemade Grandma’s Iced Lemon Tea. Get a jug, you won’t be disappointed!
  • Wafi Gourmet – Lebanese food with a view…of the fountains!
  • Ladurée – craving a macaron? Head to the acclaimed French pastry store to indulge!

4) SEGA Republic

This is definitely not your ordinary kids play-area. SEGA Republic is a 76,000 sq ft, indoor theme park containing over 150 games. The kids will be spoilt for choice at what games to play. It is Dubai after all, were you expecting anything different? 🙂

Tip: Get the Power Pass which is a day pass for all attractions. It’s pricey, $48, but it’s definitely worth it because each ride costs $8 and your kids are going to want to ride multiple times!

5) Ice Skating

Ever wanted to skate an ice-rink and pretend you’re at the Olympics? Well, the Dubai Ice Rink has got you covered! Whether you want to learn how to skate, have a disco dance session (yes, this is a real thing!), improve your techniques, play ice-hockey or have a fun time, this Olympic-size rink is guaranteed to be one of the coolest places to chill (pun intended) ;).

6) Reel Cinema’s Platinum Suites

Reel Cinemas at Dubai Mall is the largest cinemas in the region, with 22 screens and 4 luxurious Reel Cinema’s Platinum Suites. What is that, you ask? Why it is the VIP movie experience! Watching a movie in a luxury leather reclining chair, with a personal butler service to attend to you throughout the movie. If the movie is boring, and you’d rather take a nap, don’t worry, because you can always order a pillow and blanket!

If you’re planning your visit to Dubai, or you currently live there, know that you have options other than shopping at Dubai Mall – there really is something for everyone!

  • Very good read with lots of insider info someone might not be able to find in a typical guidebook. I was interested in reading this because I just started a house sit in Bali for a couple that lives in Dubai and we were chatting a bit about the country, and I was interested in learning a bit more about it. Like you said, many on a budget might write it off automatically, and these tips are super helpful for keeping costs down.
